Louise Nicholls – Adventures in horticulture – "The love of gardening is a seed once sown never dies"

Hello and Welcome

My name is Louise Nicholls and I have worked in Horticulture full time since 1998. I worked as a Head Gardener in a wonderful garden called Ulting wick which opens under the NGS several times a year and was Head Veg Gardener for Sissinghurst Castle for a number of years. I’m currently about to embark on my most exciting adventure yet. Creating an organically run walled garden to supply 2 innovative, award winning restaurants based in a 45 acre estate, restoring the woodland and victorian parkland to create a magical retreat for our guests.

As we establish the garden we will be running training courses on pruning and Organic gardening & I will still be available as a garden consultant and speaker on a wide range of topics

As a garden owner and lover you wish to create your perfect space for whatever your lifestyle. Sometimes however the array of Horticultural terms can be daunting, overwhelming! What plant? Where? How to care for it?

With 20 years of hands on Horticultural experience, from show gardens to managing 9 acre Fruit, Vegetable & Ornamental gardens, I can assist you in making the right choices for your lifestyle and for your plants so if you have any questions please do get in touch.

As a society, you wish to bring lively, enthusiastic speakers to your members. Speakers with a passion for horticulture. I am able to provide you with an interesting and diverse array of topics your members will enjoy.

A mini diary blog as promised about the challenges of organizing the present and future, from planting espaliers to managing stress, teaching new staff and trying to manage expectations in a walled garden. I find joy in sowing seeds and look forward to addressing soil issues.

Where does the time go!

The past months have been tumultuous, with travel, family discoveries, and personal loss. Despite all this I’ve found solace in gardening and the support of friends and volunteers.
The future is exciting and new gardening projects are on the horizon!

Welcome to the Stumpery!

Challenged with revitalizing an old estate area, shaded by mature trees & full of decaying wood, remnants of an old fence. Rather than impose modern designs, I chose to create a ‘stumpery’ – a Victorian garden feature using tree stumps, ferns, and other shade-loving plants, as was popular during the Picturesque movement of the 1800s. Inspired by the inventiveness of the Victorians, the team collected interesting pieces of wood and root systems to use as the basis of the stumpery, adding a diverse selection of plants and creating a space beneficial to local wildlife.
